DESCRIPTION:
Michael Strieby, Greersburg, Penn., tall case clock, with significant restoration. 8 day, time and strike, weight driven movement in a cherry case with broken arch top, five turned wood finials, star inlaid rosettes and four full columns flanking hood, string inlaid cut corner columns, reeded accents on base and cutout Hepplewhite bracket feet. The painted metal dial with maker's signature has date calendar, sweep seconds and moon phase.
CONDITION:
the clock looks great in spite of its significant restoration. The dial (and maker's signature) , hands, false plate, bell and seat board are new. The risers supporting the movement and pendulum are new. The backboard, rosettes, finials and trunk door are new. The rest of the clock movement and case appears to be circa 1820. Streiby, a Revolutionary War veteran, was born in 1757 in Bucks County, PA and made clocks there until about 1790 when he moved to western Penn. and worked in the town of Greersburg (which is now Darlington, Beaver County, PA) until his death in 1830.
